The above article is an update. Her mother went to appeal to keep her out of the psychiatric ward and lost. She will be institutionalized because of her expression of her gender. She will be held until she conforms to male gender and then released to foster care, not her mother who was supporting her.
Please, if you haven’t signed the petition, sign it, reblog it, ask your friends to sign it. We’ve managed to get 40K signatures for a pageant model, we’ve only gotten 11K for a little girl about to have her life ruined. Lets get on the ball and spread the word.

The new wave of gay ads | BuzzFeed
This year we have seen companies embrace a modern concept in gay advertising: the new normal. J.Crew, JC Penney and GAP are among several brands advertising to the LGBT community in a mature and completely approachable fashion that identifies with the pro-equality movement.

Breaking DOMA News of the Day: In a victory for gay marriage advocates that rivals the enormity of Proposition 8 in California, the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston today upheld a lower court’s ruling and declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconsitutional.
From the court’s opinion:
“[M]any Americans believe that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, and most Americans live in states where that is the law today. One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage. Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress’ denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest.”
Expect the ruling to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Whoa, big news!

josé julio sarria, gay latino who ran for public office in 1961 - many many years before harvey milk
he ran for the san francisco board of supervisors and almost won by default, until people noticed there was a gay man running and immediately submitted everyone possible for the position. he didn’t win, but he still got 6000 votes, which shocked conservatives
he was also a drag queen popular at many of the balls at the time…and he still does it today (lookin good for a guy in his late 80s)!
+ he has worked with political activism and community organizing his entire life!
Just saw this in an email from one of my professors who is an adviser for the Lesbian and Gay Vet Med Association at school. Target’s website says it will donate 100% of T-shirt sales from customers during the month of June to Family Equality Council.
See the t-shirts here.
The big thing about it though is that this has been going around anti-gay organizations, and they’re rallying people to complain to the higher-ups at Target and even boycott their store, just like what happened with the Girl Scouts when they allowed a trans* girl join.
So we need to try to support Target in this if we can. If you can’t go buy a shirt, you can email them at press@target.com to show your support. It will only take a few minutes, and it’s for a cause that I think is really near and dear to a lot of us here. Signal boost please? I can’t reach enough people with this on my own.

A Minneapolis [cis] woman is charged with starting a fight outside a bar last year that left a friend of hers dead and led to murder charges against Chrishaun “CeCe” McDonald, in a case that became a rallying point for the transgender community.
Molly Shannon Flaherty, 41, was charged May 11 with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm, both felonies, for allegedly smashing a glass in McDonald’s face outside the Schooner Bar in Minneapolis on June 5.
The Washington County attorney’s office is handling the case to avoid a conflict of interest because Hennepin County prosecutors charged McDonald with second-degree murder for stabbing Dean Schmitz, 47, in the melee.
McDonald, who is a transgender woman, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter May 2 and is expected to be sentenced to three and half years in prison. For months before the plea, McDonald’s supporters protested the charges.
Flaherty and Schmitz were among a group smoking cigarettes outside the bar just after midnight when McDonald and friends walked by, the charges said. Schmitz allegedly began hurling racial, homophobic and transgender slurs at McDonald’s group, who then confronted Schmitz, the charges said.
A fight began when Flaherty allegedly threw or pushed a bar glass in McDonald’s face, causing a gash that required 11 stitches. A witness not with either group reported seeing Flaherty on the ground and Schmitz trying to pull people off her and out of the fight. The witness then saw Schmitz step backward, hold his hand up to his shirt and say, “You stabbed me.” McDonald allegedly said, “Yes, I did,” and walked away.
In a statement, Washington County Attorney Peter Orput said charges against Flaherty were delayed because McDonald did not speak to investigators before her trial. Once she entered a plea, the case moved forward.
Flaherty was booked into the Hennepin County jail May 15. She was released the next day on $15,000 bail. She did not immediately return a telephone message for comment.

Gay Marriage Endorsement of the Day: Colin Powell jumped on the gay marriage bandwagon today with an endorsement during an interview with Wolf Blitzer:
I have no problem with it, and it was the Congress that imposed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” though it was certainly my position and my recommendation to get us out of an even worse outcome that could have occurred, as you’ll recall. But as I’ve thought about gay marriage, I know a lot of friends who are individually gay but are in partnerships with loved ones, and they are as stable a family as my family is, and they raise children. And so I don’t see any reason not to say that they should be able to get married.

Transgender Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna Talackova plans on making serious run at top prize
Vancouver’s transgender Miss Universe Canada contestant feels like she’s already triumphed by earning the chance to compete at this weekend’s pageant. But make no mistake: she also plans on making a serious run for the ultimate prize.
Jenna Talackova said this morning that the beauty competition will be “a great battle” and that she’s “in it to win it.”
